At twcreative® we've just welcomed a designer who came to the craft through computer science. Tyler learned how technology works before he understood why it matters. The part that pulled him in wasn't the code. It was the bit people actually experience, the difference between something that merely works and something that feels good to use.
Growing up in sunny Cape Town, South Africa, before moving to the UK when I was twelve, I’ve always been drawn to thoughtful design. As a kid, I was obsessed with Apple keynotes, fascinated by how their products felt so simple, intuitive and effortless. I didn’t realise it at the time, but that curiosity shaped the way I think about design today.
My route into design probably wasn’t the most straightforward. I studied Computer Science at university, learning how technology works under the hood, but I quickly found myself more interested in the part people actually experience. I love combining technology with creativity, designing interfaces, improving user experiences and creating things that felt as good to use as they looked.
Over the past three years, I’ve worked as a freelance designer across a mix of industries including fashion, health and beauty, sport, hospitality and eCommerce. No two projects were the same, which is something I loved. One week I could be designing a website, the next creating a brand identity or exploring a completely new visual challenge.
Freelancing has taught me a lot, from managing projects and building strong relationships with clients to adapting quickly and getting comfortable jumping into unfamiliar industries. But the biggest thing it’s reinforced is that great design isn’t just about making something look good. It’s about understanding people, asking the right questions and creating experiences that just work.
After a few years working independently, I found myself missing something that’s difficult to create alone: collaboration. The best ideas often come from conversations, different perspectives and challenging each other’s thinking, and that’s what I’m most excited about being part of at twcreative®.
I’m looking forward to bringing my experience as a freelancer into a creative team environment, learning from the talented people around me and contributing to work that helps our clients communicate their stories in meaningful ways.
